The James Weldon Johnson and Grace Nail Johnson Papers, JWJ MSS 49, were primarily the gift of Grace Nail Johnson, 1941-1976, with other additions. Their papers are an essential foundation of the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of African American Arts and Letters (JWJ), established in 1941 by Grace Nail Johnson and Carl Van Vechten.

The JWJ Memorial Collection documents and celebrates the cultural and artistic achievements and the intellectual and political activities of African Americans.
